When you peel the progressive onion, you find they always help the rich at the expense of the poor!2/28/2018 Electric Vehicle Subsidies Hurt the Poor and Help the Rich | RealClearEnergy But of course! Progressive policies are here to help the middle class, the upper middle class and the wealthy, not the poor. Social Security and Medicare are the gross examples of these policies. The upper class and upper middle class receive large benefits from these systems. There is no reason to transfer scarce government resources to these people; they are wealthy enough to provide these benefits themselves. While the middle and lower classes also receive benefits they receive much smaller benefits, and they tend not to live as long, and so the benefits remain concentrated in the wealthier groups. More below. Most of the alternative energy, solar panels, wind power, EVs and the like all are used only by the wealthiest people. The poor seldom have the option of putting in a $60,000 PV solar electric system with $12,500 of Tesla Powerwall as backup power, and an EV like a Tesla 3 for $35,000. But the wealthy can do this and reap the rewards of large subsidies, and, in many states, large energy payments for the energy generated.
The virtue signaling alone is often worth the expense forced on government and the poor from the subsidies. In the end, if held long enough, the wealthy landowner gets free or below cost electrical power and free or below cost auto fuel, all paid for by the poor people in the community. Progressivism looks a lot like feudalism because it is just feudalism applied to the industrial economic model. If we allow it to continue, it will even look uglier when applied to the emerging economic model. Both Social Security and Medicare are insolvent and will need to be bailed out, or they will cannibalize the federal budget. Something for the poor to help out with! Or we could do the right thing, and means test them both for income and wealth, extend the entitlement age by 5-8 years, and make them available only for those in need instead. I believe the Boomers are too venal to do the right thing. I hope I am surprised, but I don't expect to be. I expect the Millennials once they realize that the Boomers have been bankrupting the nation, not paying their taxes and otherwise trying to shunt all of the money and goodies to themselves, will stick it to the Boomers forcing all of the changes the Boomers don't want. Payback is a bitch.
