Gun control must include a national right to carry for concealed handgun licensees

7/1/2016

Comments

House Plans Vote on Guns Next Week

It should also include the ability for concealed handgun licensees to buy, and use guns/accessories for personal use only as an FFL1, meaning they can buy, guns and receive them through the mail directly, they can buy, and use suppressors, and short barreled rifles, etc.

CHL holders undergo a background check at the time they are vetted for the license, they continue to undergo background checks, and if they violate a law which requires the loss of the CHL, they have to surrender the license. They should also have immediate rights to TSA PreCheck, and the Trusted Traveler network run by US Customs and Border Security. Further investigation and background checks are unnecessary.

Bad things can happen, without warning. Is it better to be a victim, or is it better to be prepared for an unlikely eventuality?

Choose wisely. The hero here did.

‘He thought he could help’: Concealed carry gun-wielder intervenes in domestic dispute and is shot dead

. . . for oft evil will shall evil mar.

T.J. Antes a "concealed carry permit holder was trying to intervene in a domestic dispute . . .

Instead, he was killed."

There are lessons to learn here. Mr. Antes did some things right, and made a fatal mistake as well. Overall, Mr. Antes acted in the way we should expect a Marine to act, as a counterpoint to evil, in an attempt to stop a violent man from further violence.

The fatal error is not a dint on what Mr. Antes did but should be evaluated to keep others from making the same mistake. The general rule is once the person acting violent breaks off the encounter, the concealed carry holder should as well. This is not hard and fast, but once the chance of violence has declined, placing oneself in harms way becomes increasingly difficult to justify. This outcome shows us why.

Temper fi, and condolences to his family. I am sure he will be greatly missed. I appreciate his attempt to maintain order in a world seeking to spin ever into chaos. His actions where the actions of a man attempting to do good, and thwart evil, but as evil will, it ultimately destroyed itself by killing Mr. Antes. A long prison sentence for Bradden is the only likely outcome from this encounter.

Once part of the story needs to be corrected because it is simply factually wrong.

The "journalist" writes, "As the number of states allowing people to carry guns has increased, reports of injuries and deaths have also risen." This is an absolutely false statement.

Some background history, the general move from "may issue" to "shall issue" concealed handgun licensing for most states occurred from the mid 1980s through about 2005 when the emphasis shifted from a move to "shall issue" to "Constitutional carry", essentially the right to carry without the need for a permit.

FBI statistics show that in 1960 the rate of violent crime in the US was 160.9 per 100,000 population. The violent crime rate rose unrelentingly thereafter. And by the mid 1980s the states were taking action to allow their citizens to protect themselves by adopting "shall issue" concealed carry laws.

by 1986 the violent crime rate was 620.1 per 100,000 population. As the states increasingly adopted concealed carry laws the violent crime rate slowed, plateaued and then reversed. The rate was 758.1 in 1991, and then dropped to 506.5 in 2000, and further dropped to 469.0 in 2005. During the slow early adoption of "shall issue" concealed carry laws by states the violent crime rates continued to rise somewhat, but as more states adopted these laws, the crime rate plateaued, and finally dropped. The violent crime rate today after myriad states have adopted "Constitutional carry" is even lower at 375.7 per 100,000 population.

There is no evidence to support the fact that reports of injuries and deaths has also risen. The evidence does support a serious decline in violent crime, however. The same evidence holds for murder in the US and nearly every other serious or violent crime.

The "journalist" points the readers to a few anecdotal stories as apparent proof.

In a different vein, it is interesting that the new face of the American $20 bill will be a black, republican, gun toting, chick who fought the Democrat party for the liberty of an entire peoples, and, with a bit of help, won! You go girl! I would do anything to get rid of the racist, Democrat bigot front man on the bill today. Thanks Obama! Perhaps for the first time I actually mean it.

Instapundit » Blog Archive » IT PASSED BOTH HOUSES OF THE LEGISLATURE BY VETO-PROOF MAJORITIES AND THE GOVERNOR LET IT PASS INTO …

. . . since the law passed by veto-proof majorities in both houses.

"The law, which allows full-time employees to carry concealed handguns, protects higher education institutions from monetary liability for handgun use. Those who want to carry guns on campus have to notify law enforcement and have a valid conceal carry permit. According to the Tennessean, handguns can’t be brought into stadiums or gymnasiums, and the law doesn’t allow students to carry handguns on campus.

Faculty and staff also can’t carry concealed handguns in meetings for discussing disciplinary or tenure issues, or into hospitals, according to the Associated Press."

First let me say, concealed handgun license holders are the safest, most law abiding large group of people in any state. Police have far more incidents of criminality.

Second, this law is a good tentative start but it does not go nearly far enough.

Third, all venues, or properties which are open to the public but do not allow concealed carry under the state license should be strictly liable for the protection of everyone within the location who is proscribed from self defense. This is to say all injuries or deaths related to a self defense event would be the absolute liability of the property owner. This should include all public buildings including courthouses. Further all such entities shall carry insurance to cover this strict, and absolute liability.

Then let the chips fall where they may. Property owners who wish to limit legal concealed carry on premises, would have to put their insurance money where there mouths were, and the insurers would undoubtedly require lots of highly trained professionals to ensure no self defense events occurred.

This would address the Governors concerns, level the playing field, and address the concerns of the Legislature.

"WHEN VICTIMS AREN’T VICTIMS: “The suspect then attempted to carjack two additional victims, however the final intended victim produced a handgun and pointed it at the suspect and the suspect fled on foot southbound on Coit Road.”

Produced? I own a handgun or 40 and I suspect it would be quite a trick to produce a handgun. Draw a handgun perchance?

"On April 19, 2016, at about 8:50 p.m., Dallas police officers were flagged down by a citizen regarding a White male suspect involved in a disturbance at 7900 LBJ Freeway.   As officers made contact with the suspect, he fled on foot. The suspect ran to an occupied vehicle, pulled the victim out and drove off in the victim’s 2013 Toyota and escaped."

Yes, we live in the safest times in American history, but still, lock your car doors when driving, there are some very stupid wankers like this Sad Sack still on the lamb.

Sad Sack, er, Captain Cranium, then looked around and said, "'My name is Ozymandias, king of kings: Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!'" Or something like that, then he returned to his idiotic crime spree. Dude leaves a trail like a slug!

"On the following evening at about 6:40 p.m., a White male suspect approached a male victim in the motel parking lot 12121 Coit Road and attempted to carjack a victim at knife point. The victim surrendered his vehicle, however the suspect was unable to operate the standard transmission. The suspect then attempted to carjack two additional victims, however the final intended victim produced a handgun and pointed it at the suspect and the suspect fled on foot southbound on Coit Road.

Officers were actively searching for the suspect in those robberies when they received a 9-1-1 call involving the same White male suspect reportedly breaking into an apartment one block south at 12009 Coit Road.  When officers arrived, they found that the suspect had caused damage to a sliding glass door trying to get into the apartment but had already left the location.

While officers were investigating the burglary attempt, they received a second 9-1-1 call regarding a burglary of another apartment in the same complex. A 90-year-old female victim reported that a White male suspect forced entry into her apartment carrying a large knife and told her he was hiding from police. The suspect grabbed the 90-year-old female victim by the arm and attempted to drag her at knifepoint into her bathroom.  The victim broke away from the suspect and fled her apartment.

Officers entered the victim’s apartment and made contact with the suspect who was hiding in the bathroom. The suspect informed the officers that he was armed with a knife and a gun and refused to surrender. After several hours of negotiations officers were able to take the suspect into custody uninjured.

The suspect was identified as Maxxim Elliot Bedford, a 26-year-old White male. Bedford has been identified as the individual responsible for each of the aforementioned offenses and is in the Dallas County Jail charged with Burglary, Criminal Mischief, and three counts of Aggravated Robbery."

Happy ending! Sad Sack will get a well deserved, and good long vacation, er, prison sentence with three hots, and a cot, and probably a really nice boyfriend! Plus, neither the police, nor the handgun producer had to shoot the fool. Only in America™.

A nice tutorial on how to secure a prisoner until the police arrive. 1. Finger off trigger, 2. Prostrate perpetrator, although I would prefer 15' of distance not 6', 3. Maintain muzzle safety by pointing it towards either the perpetrator, or a safe target, 4. As police arrive, the victim disarms himself, placing the handgun on the ground. After that make sure you talk to the police and ask permission to handle the handgun, or ask them to briefly take it into custody till the arrest is made. Don't risk forgetting it in the confusion.

PSU Protesters Want to Ban THESE From Campus; They AREN'T Joking...

. . . but watching the failure parade does make one feel better about one's own children.

It's "Portland" State University, what can you expect? Here at the home of kaleidoscope eye progressivism, this rates as Monday. This level of ignorance permeates the entire community from the clown college they employ as City Council right on down to the PSU students.

"It’s hard to even comprehend college students such as these Portland State University students can get even MORE stupid but they sure do try hard.

From Campus Reform:

Students at Portland State University (PSU) shut down a Board of Trustees meeting with accusations that the school perpetuates a “corrupt decadent white-supremacist capitalist patriarchy hetero-patriarchy.” [emphasis added]"

Wait for it! You know it gets better, it's Portland!

"'I’m a transwoman of color and for me to just walk across campus, like, that’s, I mean—I see you [points to a police officer standing in the room] and I think that’s great, like, that you’re, you know, um, like, you’re here, but, like, you know, like, what you represent to people like me is that, like, is violence, the threat of violence, and I hope you know that, and just, like, basically, I do not feel safe here. I’m pretty sure all of you do not feel safe here with, like, men with guns here, and mind you, Oregon was founded on white supremacist capitalist ideology,” she said to a round of applause from her fellow protesters."

The sound of his, er, her,  er, um, it's voice is so enjoyed by it, that it can't stop talking even when it has nothing to say, but jabberwocky. Sorry sweetie, I, like, don't, you know, like, um, er, like, um, you know, guns, you're, you know, like, threat, um, er, violence. Sweetie, perhaps you could hire someone who can string an entire sentence together to speak for you, because you are an idiot.

Perhaps it was the ozone. The levels in the room must have been EPA ThreatCon I what with all those "well-educated" brains, smoking, sparking, and farting. The tragedy is these incoherent, mindless, fools believe they are educated. But a 5 minute conversation with one will prove otherwise. They speak only in platitudes, linked occasionally by "thinking words." Or, on really good days, you only get the platitudes sans conjunctions, or "thinking words." These conversations play like a wildly inappropriate platitude association game. You say a word, they list all the platitudes which can be used in response to that word.

Brilliant.
You ignorant troll, the only racists here are you, and your fellow travelers. If you are worried about armed white men in Portland, not cops mind you, your worries are completely misplaced. Whitey with a Concealed Handgun License is the least criminal cohort in the population, they are about as criminal as quadriplegic monks.

crimeresearch.org: Concealed Carry Permit Holders Across the United States

On the other hand, blacks and muslims are dangerous folks. "Black on white crime is higher and more prevalent than white on black crime. Apparently this chick hasn’t taken a stats class or bothered to look at Black Criminals, White Victims, and White Guilt." Portland Christmas tree bomber gets 30 years as questions about arrest linger. Notice how "white" he looks? Me neither. In fact, he looks amazingly like the chick here, well, thinner.

As Pogo said, "We have met the enemy, and he is us."

What you should be concerned about is female genital mutilation.

Female Genital Mutilation Is A U.S. Problem, Too.

It is time to simply cut the cord completely on state funding of higher education. This is no longer a productive enterprise. Until a more reasonable alternative exists, I would be very careful about hiring one of these "educated" idiots.

The Only Safe Place Is America

. . . and for pretty much the same reasons you do.

In a messy, dangerous world, America is the last safe place, but for how long?

Ben, I'll toss you a lifeline. Read this book, and then realize that the West is more potent than we let on. Then go review a bit of Civil War history. We also tend to be tenacious. You'll feel better in the morning!

Carnage and Culture: Landmark Battles in the Rise to Western Power Paperback – August 27, 2002 by Victor D. Hanson

We Americans are pretty willing to sleep in our protected castle, until it becomes clear we can sleep no more. Then we awaken, produce war material like a maniac, and then go and kill everyone who made the fuss. After we feel a bit down, so we produce like mad, have children like mad, the economy goes mad, and we become wealthy. We freely spread money around and the world begins to recover. Things get back to normal. Until the idiots just can't keep from Eff'ing the whole thing up again. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Remember Ben, if you really feel insecure, there are plenty of places with real live concealed carry laws, and many of us who would welcome someone like you as a neighbor. Come up sometime, go shooting, you might just like it. Summers here are the best anywhere in the world, winters are a gray bitch, but summer . . .
