TomTom Traffic Index
An index of the world's traffic congestion.
No shock, but Portlandia with all of its wonderful transit options registers a solid 9th worst for traffic congestion in the US, and 85th in the world. The transit options are always sold as ways of reducing congestion, but this is Le Gran Canard. It would be extremely silly for anyone to actually believe that transit which carries only about 2.4% of Portlandia's traffic could with a fairly minor addition suddenly increase ridership to carry enough people to noticeably reduce rush hour congestion.
But that is the argument made, and often regurgitated to me when discussing the issue. However, reality intrudes, and with every new light rail, or tram, or commuter rail line, the congestion worsens.
At number 9 in the US for congestion, Portlandia is in rarefied company, and moving up will be difficult. I suspect the regions transportation planners are up to the task! Expect more congestion in Portlandia's future. Expect more light rail, streetcars, and other nonsense "solutions" to this very real problem. Expect longer commutes, and less time with family. Thank your local transportation planner for this innovation.
