We all live on campus now Even Sullivan can see the damage that Obama's puerile harshening of the race, sex, and culture wars has caused. "Over the last year, the most common rebuttal to my intermittent coverage of campus culture has been: Why does it matter? These are students, after all. They’ll grow up once they leave their cloistered, neo-Marxist safe spaces. The real world isn’t like that. You’re exaggerating anyway. And so on. I certainly see the point. In the world beyond campus, few people use the term microaggressions without irony or an eye roll; claims of “white supremacy,” “rape culture,” or “white privilege” can seem like mere rhetorical flourishes; racial and gender segregation hasn’t been perpetuated in the workplace yet; the campus Title IX sex tribunals where, under the Obama administration, the “preponderance of evidence” rather than the absence of a “reasonable doubt” could ruin a young man’s life and future are just a product of a hothouse environment." Obama's legacy is the re-ignition of both the curdled spiritual awakening of the Boomer generation and the re-ignition of the most hateful of the culture wars from the GenX generation. For this alone, Obama should earn the title, The Worst President in American History™. But Sully sees things through a warped lens. More below. "Polarization has made this worse — because on the left, moderation now seems like a surrender to white nationalism, and because on the right, white identity politics has overwhelmed moderate conservatism. And Trump plays a critical role. His crude, bigoted version of identity politics seems to require an equal and opposite reaction. And I completely understand this impulse. Living in this period is to experience a daily, even hourly, psychological hazing from the bigot-in-chief. And when this white straight man revels in his torment of those unlike him — and does so with utter impunity among his supporters — there’s a huge temptation to respond in kind. A president who has long treated women, in his words, “like shit,” and bragged about it, is enough to provoke rage in any decent person. But anger is rarely a good frame of mind to pursue the imperatives of reason, let alone to defend the norms of liberal democracy." White identity politics on the right? Where? I am not of the right, but I don't see any significant evidence of white identity politic outside of the vanishingly small alt-right movement which is not conservative at all. The alt-right is a leftist movement which has taken the opposite side of the racial divide from the leftist progressives. It is the left's mirror image. It has nothing in common with the right. The idea that Trump causes this anti-liberalism is wrong. "... Trump plays a critical role. His crude, bigoted version of identity politics seems to require an equal and opposite reaction." The progressive left cannot accept responsibility, especially for this horror. The left has created a monster on the campus and is now shocked by their creation. They blame Trump when what is happening is everything the left hates is being attacked by the left's irrational, illiterate, innumerate, indoctrinated, credentialed but not educated monster. The True Believers within the left's beast do not think; they emote; so it is always with mass movements. Those of the left like Sully are now shocked, but they should not be, this is their creation, their ideology spawned this monstrosity. This hell is their legacy and the legacy of Barak Obama. Sully standing up at this late date, shrilly crying out will not change his culpability in this creation. Notice that Sully's fears here were triggered by the fact that a fellow journalist has been bullied and threatened not only by the monster but by regressively minded journalists as well. Sully is animated because he sees and fears his writing might be pilloried, or censured. Where was Sully over the past 30 years while the culture wars raged and his fellow progressives built this now raging monster? If I remember correctly, Sully was pointing at Sarah Palin's Magic Womb™. Sully occasionally gets things correct, but more often he is a troll doing the bidding of the progressive left. In the video below, Dave Rubin discusses the fact that the progressive left is not liberal. I never thought they were, but he did. The progressive left has always been socialist/progressive and totalitarian. The people who are attracted to collectivist ideas are grounded in the philosophy of Jean-Jacques Rousseau who believed the natural man was perfect, but that modern life had corrupted him. All that was necessary to re-achieve perfection was for good bureaucrats, and experts to build a proper political and social foundation. This is the political equivalent of alchemy. The result is these believers seek power to control people ostensibly to make man perfect, but that never happens. What happens is totalitarian control and mass murder. Rubin is correct the progressive left is the most dangerous political movement today. One of the key reasons the left has become so irrational is the leftist live in communities with an extremely high density of leftist. These communities act as echo chambers without alternate viewpoints or ideas. These rote views are reinforced by the media which slavishly follows the overwhelmingly left progressive talking points. Those within this group form a worldview which is never challenged. The result is poor ideas are unchallenged and go on to become dogma. The classical liberals, libertarians, independents, and conservatives mostly dodge this bullet because the media, academia, and many institutions are so doggedly leftist progressive. As a result, these groups are always forced to analyze this leftist progressive information and determine whether it changes their opinions. The people within these groups are continually wrestling with new ideas and arguments which might force them to change their worldview. In addition, these groups all have significantly different worldview which require them to constantly discuss, support, or refute opinions and ideas. The result is poor ideas are ash canned, while good ideas are polished, honed, and promoted. "Look: I don’t doubt the good intentions of the new identity politics — to expand the opportunities for people previously excluded. I favor a politics that never discriminates against someone for immutable characteristics — and tries to make sure that as many people as possible feel they have access to our liberal democracy. But what we have now is far more than the liberal project of integrating minorities. It comes close to an attack on the liberal project itself. Marxism with a patina of liberalism on top is still Marxism — and it’s as hostile to the idea of a free society as white nationalism is. So if you wonder why our discourse is now so freighted with fear, why so many choose silence as the path of least resistance, or why the core concepts of a liberal society — the individual’s uniqueness, the primacy of reason, the protection of due process, an objective truth — are so besieged, this is one of the reasons. The goal of our culture now is not the emancipation of the individual from the group, but the permanent definition of the individual by the group. We used to call this bigotry. Now we call it being woke. You see: We are all on campus now." Sully sees this problem and understands it is existential because it is coming for him. He also understands that Marxism whether classical or neo- is a totalitarian death trap. What he does not seem to understand is that the progressive left has not been liberal since at least the mid-1960s. The progressive left is totalitarian, it is not liberal, nor does it desire or demand liberal objectives. The same can be said of white nationalism because it is necessarily the same as progressivism only in mirror image. The real difference between the two is white nationalism accounts for a handful of people nationwide while progressive leftism accounts for +25% of the population including pretty much everyone in the Democratic Party. Here in Mayberry, er, Raleigh Hills, the ground is thick with Democrats who espouse all the correct platitudes including all of the horrific identity politics Sully has been discussing. The same can be said for all of the islands in the Clinton Archipelago. These people are hostile to a free society, they want the totalitarianism which comes with neo-Marxism, and they want nothing more than to throttle the classical liberals, the libertarians, the independents, and the conservatives who disagree with them. I know, I hear it said nearly every time I meet these people, some of whom are friends. I will end with two video views of an odious neighbor of mine. She is representative of a large percentage of the Democratic Party here in totalitarianist Portlandia and throughout the Clinton Archipelago. Pathetic. She would have made an excellent Soviet tattler always ratting out a family member for failing to observe and follow the Marxist cant. Her warped ideology supreme, even above family. Here she couldn't keep her mouth shut; she had to loudly and harshly censure the young man sitting next to her even while her mild husband grieved his mother's death. What a troll. The result was she, and he were removed from the plane.
Were I he, she would have left, I would have remained, I would have wished her luck on her return flight. The outcome of such behavior can be seen in this story of climate alarmist obsession so severe it destroyed the family. Climate Alarmism destroys lives! Fortunately this woman's husband tolerates her obsessive warped nonsense. Well, fortunately for her, not for him, I'm just glad he took a bullet for the Patriarchy. Heh.
