Video captures officers using stun gun on sitting man So, the cops have a young man sitting on the curb. One cop is behind him the other is off to his right and behind him. The cop behind him says, "Legs straight out or you are getting tased! Straight out! Straight out!" The man slowly extends his legs as the female cop off to the right who is running the camera says, "Put your legs straight out and cross them now!" So, the young man retracts and crosses his legs and is immediately tased! More below. He followed the two officers conflicting commands and got tased. Personally, if I were on a jury, I would likely consider this assault on the individual by the police officer. The real problem is police have no discipline when they are in stressful situations. No matter how many videos I watch, when police are under stress they all yell commands at the individual they want to control. It is a cacophony of yelling cops. Why? Do they think this will get the individual to comply? Do they think that yelling will work better than using a strong, commanding but measured voice? Or are they frightened irrational? My money would be on the latter. Perhaps the police could use some training! This is the kind of individual control police need to do daily. This should be dead bang straightforward. When in the courtroom I do not allow other attorneys or associates to jump up and yell things at the judge or witnesses. I control my litigation space, and everyone knows their role. With police, they all seem to think they are in control and the more yelling, the merrier. The young man needs to bring a civil suit against the department. He should also file a criminal complaint. These officers made it impossible for him to comply and then one assaulted him when he technically complied with one officer's commands. This may be great fun for the police, but it is less fun for we the citizens who have to wonder if we aren't next. The only upside is police seem to tase and shoot themselves as well.
