"If you're trying to lose weight, you'll probably be restricting the amount of food you're eating in a day.
But two nutritionists say you don't have to cut back on calories to reach your ideal weight - and the secret is making sure you're eating the right thing at breakfast. C&J Nutrition, aka Maryland-based Stephanie Clarke and Willow Jarosh, from New York City, have come up with a very mathematic approach for devising the best breakfasts to eat if you want to keep trim." Ok, I generally agree. "They say the best method to eat your way to effective weight loss is by consuming between 300 and 400 calories in the morning." Again, I generally agree. "They then suggest the breakfast should be made up of about 10-15g of fat, 25g of fibre, and 13 to 20g of protein; they point to studies which suggest a high-protein diet may lead to weight loss." Again, I agree, but how do they get anywhere near 25 g fiber in these breakfasts? They don't, not even close. Remember, women are supposed to get +25 g, and men are to get +35 g of fiber each day. That's dietary fiber, not magic fiber. If they eat a lot of walnuts on the oatmeal they can get the fiber up to per perhaps 6 g, or 7 g but 25 g? No. "They also advise not to have any more than 6g of added sugars in your morning meal. The idea is to have a filling breakfast that's high in protein, nutrient-rich and low in added sugars, which gives you the perfect balance of almost every food group." The deal seems to be high protein (35%), high fiber (35 g), with at least 30% mostly "good" oils is about an optimum balanced daily diet. I don't worry too much about any one meal. My breakfast: 4 oz. skirt steak, 1/2 c black eyed peas, 1/4 c brown rice, 1/3 c hot salsa (50/50 mix of salsa and Secret Aardvark habanero hot sauce), 1 c oat meal plain. I make the beans, rice, steak, and salsa into a "dry" chili, microwave for a few minutes, mix. I eat it all with a cup of coffee. Total calories just at 500. But then I weigh 240 lbs, and I have a high activity workout. I still have lost 50 lbs. over the past less than 3 months. That is a lot of food, and I have an additional 2000 calories I can eat during the rest of the day. Hey, it's tea time! Twinning Ceylon Orange Pekoe.
