The reason is Ford had her testimony, only. She has no corroboratory evidence or testimony. The other people who knew Kavanaugh and Ford during the time in question dispute that the event happened and have no recollection of Ford or anyone else telling them of the event until the present.
Ford came across as believing herself, but with the fallibility of memory, that is not enough over the course of such a long period. Memory loss, memory embroidery, and memory filling all work to destroy memory over such long periods of time. She admitted to not knowing anything except for the act itself; this bodes against credibility. On the other hand, Kavanaugh had not just his memory but his calendar and all of the people who knew he and Ford at the time support his story, not hers. The calendar is important. I was able to recreate accurated memories of events long past by reviewing my law firm billing whips, my calendars, and my diaries. Without those tools my memory was far less accurate. Kavanaugh comes off as a credible man, and his reputation is impecable. Either Kavanaugh will be confirmed, or no conservative man will be able to be confirmed again. The Democrats will continue to create these issues and bring forward unsubstantiated allegations if they are successful here. The other factor weighing for confirmation is there are a significant number of Democratic Senators in states Trump won handily who are in hard fights for reelection. The polls show that Trump's supporters strongly support Kavanaugh and do not believe Ford. These Senators will have to weigh the difficult choice of voting against the party in the hopes of winning their seat after pissing off their voters or voting for the Kavanaugh confirmation. If they vote for Kavanaugh, they could use that vote in an attempt to persuade their voters to reelect them, while this would not be a sure thing, voting against Kavanaugh would be close to Senatorial suicide. Even with Jeff "Flakey" Flake voting, Kavanaugh should win confirmation. The Ford testimony is not sufficiently supported to meet the standard. What standard, well, I assume the Senators of conscience, none of whom are Democrats, are using the standard: Would a reasonable business person rely on Fords allegations and testimony if it affected them in the ordinary course of their business. I would not. Memories are too fallible over such long periods. Absent confirmation from high-quality witnesses or corroborating facts, Ford does not meet the standard. Kavanaugh will be confirmed.
