This seems to be a thing.
While kayaking, I've seen eagles attack many birds, fish, and small mammals but a few years ago while winter paddling on the Willamette River, I saw something more unusual. A Bald Eagle was dive bombing a small flock of ducks and a passing pair of geese flying full speed just above the water saw the eagle, diverted their destination and hit the eagle just before it could snatch one of the ducks. For a minute I thought I might need to rescue the eagle but it did not hit the water and flew off, shaken not stirred.
The geese continued on their way at 40+ mph, the ducks found a new place to congregate, and the eagle went hungry. Pretty amazing and I was close enough to paddle through the still falling feathery carnage of the impact.
