George Monbiot is like road kill, an all too common annoyance

George Monbiot Eats Roadkill to Save The Planet

At least he will help reduce the road kill annoyance. Here in the US we used to call this destitute poverty, in Britain they call it virtue seeking environmentalism.

More below the fold.
Worrall notes, "I quite like Monbiot, or at least I find him more entertaining than most greens.

Sometimes he shows a flash of common sense, such as when he defended nuclear power in the wake of Fukushima. Then he goes and blows it by saying something wild, such as telling everyone the corrupt media are keeping the end of the world a secret."

I have to agree, I do like the Moonbat! And his occasional flashes of consciousness allowing rational thought are refreshing. Further, he is about as funny as is possible for a green, a lot not noted for funny. Funny like this:

"The world can cope with 7 or even 10 billion people. But only if we stop eating meat. Livestock farming is the most potent means by which we amplify our presence on the planet. It is the amount of land an animal-based diet needs that makes it so destructive. An analysis by the farmer and scholar Simon Fairlie suggests that Britain could easily feed itself within its own borders. But while a diet containing a moderate amount of meat, dairy and eggs would require the use of 11m hectares of land (4m of which would be arable), a vegan diet would demand a total of just 3m. Not only do humans need no pasture, but we use grains and pulses more efficiently when we eat them ourselves, rather than feed them to cows and chickens."

Please, do clarify, Mr. Moonbat, because here in the US we are turning land out of agriculture faster than can be believed. Better crops, with higher yields are producing more food on less land, at least on non-organic farms.

On organic farms it is the opposite. Organic farming land inefficiency The organic farm is highly land inefficient. Plus, without all the animals were will the organic farms get their fertilizer. Oh, right your poop. Yum! Organic farming today is deadlier than non, and this would make that far worse. Organic Food Has 'Significantly Higher' Contamination, Study Finds This is bad when cow, chicken, or pig, but how deadly when human?

And why would Britain want to produce all, or even most of its food products in Britain? This is actually one of those brain teasers only because the wackadoo environmentalists have been carping about how we need to be locavores for decades. But economically it does not make sense to grow something in a place where it requires more resources, and ends up costing more, then in a place where it costs fewer resources but requires a nominal amount of resources to ship.

A good example is the banana. While it could be grown in Britain, why? It would require vast indoor, climate controlled spaces with artificial sunlight. This would be to save a few pennies per banana in shipping costs? Madness. But this is the mind of the green weenie. The obsession over trivial fuel use to transport a banana should be overcome by massive fuel use to build, heat, and light the British banana farm! Booyah!

Mr. Moonbat, please just do the smart thing, buy the lowest priced, best quality banana, and enjoy it, it will be every bit as good for you as the $15 per each locally grown banana. You will really be saving the world (from lunatic environmentalists), and you will be helping the local banana growing people work their way out of poverty (well, provided their government has reformed religions, republican government, free markets, and extensive individual liberty).

"This would enable 15m hectares of the land now used for farming in Britain to be set aside for nature. Alternatively, on a vegan planet, Britain could feed 200 million people. Extending this thought experiment to the rest of the world, it’s not hard to see how gently we could tread if we stopped keeping animals. Rainforests, savannah, wetlands, magnificent wildlife can live alongside us, but not alongside our current diet."

Huh? Moonbat, organic farming will take huge amounts of land to produce the crops necessary to feed the world, the organic zealots argue it can be done. But we know that normal food production already provides more calories per day than the world needs. We also have experience with the fact that this route has in the past kept up with the worlds caloric needs. We have no experience with organic other than as a trivial first world fad. We also know that organic is not any better for human health. Why would we even contemplate going down this parlous road? This is religion driving us down a reckless road, in the pursuit of virtue.

Some animals, like deer, get along extraordinarily well living around farms, others like the cougar do not. Go figure. Converting ever spare patch of land to farm will not have the Unicorn fantasy results of lions and lambs resting paw in paw together near a babbling brook, well, unless you change your name to Brooke. Fantasy lives fully within ones head, reality claims all other. Sorry.

We do not need wild haired men with pinwheel eyes and spittle flecked glasses advising us, we need cool rational heads. People like Norman Borlaug fit the bill nicely, now if we could just find a few like him still living.

"Then something happened that broke down the wall of denial. Last September I arranged to spend a day beside the River Culm in Devon, renowned for its wildlife and beauty. However, the stretch I intended to explore had been reduced to a stinking ditch, almost lifeless except for some sewage fungus. I traced the pollution back to a dairy farm. A local man told me the disaster had been developing for months. But his efforts to persuade the Environment Agency (the government regulator) to take action had been fruitless."

It used to be that the community as it became wealthy forced the local polluters to clean up their act. But then the progressive Blue State built the agency system, and ripped the power to force change from the local and handed it to a faceless bureaucratic agency. Now the local is forced to deal with polluters who, if they pay to play, can continue to pollute. This allows a vast area of graft, and corruption for the politicians, and bureaucrats, but leaves the local people pounding sand.

How cool is that?!

Beyond that Moonbat doesn't even recognize that the earth's human population is poised to tank. Even the African nations have been reducing child bearing rates at huge speed. While just a few years ago, only Italy was demographically declining, now, and in the near future, most of Europe, west, and east will enter the decline, same for Russia, Japan, and not too far down the road, China. Africa will continue to shrink its family size. Today it is one of the only regions with substantial growth.

Moonbat is solving a problem which is disappearing, rapidly. He is solving it with the least valuable option, and doing so based solely on a personal religious belief. Religion can be defined as an integrated world view relying, in whole, or part, on faith or belief, where faith is theistic religion, and belief is secular. Moonbat is a secular religious fanatic, the religion is unreformed, and therefore, by definition, extremely dangerous, and deadly.

You've been warned.
