Get Your Children Good and Dirty
I don't remember not playing outside, or in the creek behind the houses across the street, or some other dirty, grubby outdoorsy place.
Our children did the same. They played outside most of the summer, with the boys down the street. And we waterskied, and wake boarded just about every day in the summer as well, and they spent a lot of time on the beaches along the Willamette River digging river clams, picking blackberries, building rafts, making mud pies, doing whatever it is kids do when they are allowed full run of an island. We always had a dog, and often had chickens, and bees, and rabbits. Animals are part of the wild no matter how domesticated, and dirt is part of the wild. Plus, we camped, canoed, kayaked, snow skied, snow shoed, and spent most of the fall, winter, and spring outside as well.
And there is nothing like requiring the kids help with the yard work to get a kid good and grimy.
All good, all fun, and all beneficial, just like all real life. Make sure you get out and get some, your kids too!
