Britain's landlords are making a killing from an impossible situation poor people are in
This is not the landlords fault, nor is the fact that government incompetence is driving this problem a reason to pillory the landlord.
"The main reason for this situation is due to Britain's major housing shortage and consequentially a rise in property prices. If there is too little supply but huge demand, then prices will go up."
This is axiomatic. So why the shortage? The shortage was created by the Town and Country Planning Act of 1947. Since then the government has doubled down on this nonsense. The result is Britain has insufficient land for development, high housing prices, and more poverty because of this.
High housing prices nearly guarantee more poverty, less wealth accumulation among the poor, and more need for welfare.
Government involvement paying for "affordable housing" will not work to alleviate the problem, it will only create a lottery like win for the few who receive the housing.
The solution is simple, remove the restrictions on property development, growth boundaries, etc, and allow people to buy land, as they see fit. Over a short period of time, the housing situation will sort itself out, and there will be more housing available for every income level, with more desirable housing available for the poor, than is currently available. Best yet, none of this will require government money.
Or, the Brits can continue down this road of ruin, limiting housing stock, driving up prices, impoverishing millions, and draining the public treasury.
