Life in the Olympic shadow: Slums 750m away from Rio's Maracana arena
In 1982, I lived in a small town in Mexico, while it did not have anything like the teaming Mangueira favelas, it had pockets of true poverty. Not what we call poverty in America, but the real thing. The photos here took me back, to my first shocking experience with true poverty. But for its endemic corruption, Brazilians could all live better, safer, more productive lives.
