Uber CEO Travis Kalanick says its self-driving cars will create more jobs, not destroy them
"Travis Kalanick says that Uber needs to move fast on self-driving cars or face an "existential threat" from foes like Google.
But the CEO's attitude and ambition may sound an awful lot like a looming existential threat for another group: the thousands of people that currently drive for the ride-hailing startup."
Because driving cars is the pinnacle of human achievement? The goal of millions, and how can we free these people from these wonderful jobs?!
Please tell me this is a joke argument.
Uber will lower the price of transportation. This will allow anyone using this new, cheap form of transportation to save money on their transit costs, while reducing the time it takes to travel between locations. Yes, even people who own cars today will not need to find a place to park, and then walk long distances through the parking lot to the building. This means these people will have more time to be productive, and will have more money in their pocket.
While a time savings of 20 minutes per day seems small, in the aggregate over millions of people it becomes huge, and some fraction will use this time productively, and a few highly productively.
The money saved will allow individuals to save more, invest more, and spend more. Again, in the aggregate this is a huge amount of money, and a few will put this to very productive use.
All of this means, more jobs, and better jobs, jobs not easily automated by robot automobiles. The ATM did not destroy the banking job, it made it better. Uber will not destroy jobs, it will make them better. Or is the argument we should return to the 19th century, eschew the past 150 years of automation, and REALLY live? Because anyone believing that his historically illiterate.
