'Top Gun' actress Kelly McGillis attacked at her North Carolina home
"Later, she also posted a long essay on the reasons, including being the victim of other crimes, that she got a concealed-carry permit despite advice not to.
"For those of you on my feed that are telling me that getting a cc permit is not the best choice for me to make, well let me fill you in on a few things that have lead me to this decision. Which by the way, I have struggled over for a long long time. Not being pro gun fanatic. When I was 12 I was gang raped by three men."
The National Rifle Association cheered her on its Facebook page.
"Not willing to be a victim again, actress Kelly McGillis has decided to exercise her Second Amendment rights, and protect herself by getting a concealed carry permit," it said."
Concealed Handgun License for when crime strikes out of the blue, cops, for the aftermath or when you know of the crime an hour in advance of the criminal act. CHL is much like auto insurance, do you carry it only at times you think you will need it, or do you carry it all the time?
My record is good, I had one zero dollar "at fault" accident when I bumped a car bumper with my motorcycle wheel and the bike dropped over. The only reason it was even considered an accident was the driver behind me was a police officer. He made us exchange information, but there was no report.
Even so I carry auto liability and always have. It protects my wallet. CHL and handgun are no different, threat or no, the tiny inconvenience is outweighed by the fact that I have been a subject of crime quite a few times including serious assaults, and armed attempted robbery. When called for serious crimes in progress, police take a minimum of about 30 minutes, they are unwilling to come without backup. If you don't have thirty minutes to tap dance with a violent criminal, you will need a solution other than police.
McGillis has chosen one of the alternatives, she now must spend enough time shooting, operating, and understanding her gun, to make sure safety is second nature, she also must develop and understand a decision tree which will allow her to immediately categorize threats and only act on the appropriate ones. No mistakes.
This is not a road for all, but CHL holders are the safest, least criminal people, and the statistics bear this out.
Welcome aboard Ms. McGillis, remain calm, and carry.
