Somme 'Iron Harvest' will take 500 years to clear, say bomb disposal experts on centenary of bloody battle
This was one of the world's great mistakes. Military leaders experienced before the industrial age, fighting a war with industrial age weapons, resulting in shocking numbers of killed and wounded. It was as if the generals has fashioned two huge grinders and marched their soldiers into them. The battle ranged from 1 July to 18 November, 1916, with total casualties of 1,088,907 (both sides). The war changes Europe culturally, socially, religiously, and politically. The reverberations are still felt today. Pray for peace.

Worst science of the year: “‘Unprecedented’: Scientists declare ‘global climate emergency’ after jet stream crosses equator”
Dude with a masters degree in playing with lasers decides to coronate himself as a Climate Scientist then beclowns himself by breathlessly claiming something which is not particularly interesting "unprecedented!" Now, please, go change you underwear, Paul. More after the break. How long before our climate betters decide global warming vanquished, on to fight global cooling?6/30/2016 The sun is as blank as a billiard ball, solar activity dwindling to lows not seen in 200 years
Obviously with more of the same controlling authoritarian demands oddly similar to the demands needed to "solve" global warming! If one were not appropriately indoctrinated, one could mistakenly believe this was about control, and not saving the world from CAGW, er, CAGC! Attempting to enter the idea that the sun might be a primary driver of global temperatures causes all manner of problems here in the Peoples Democratic Republic of Portlandia. Those faced with this insurmountable argument commonly just make up some crap. Or I become a racist. Odd that!? I owe the unnamed hero a beer, let me know when you will be in Portland. More below the fold. The Rule of Law Promotes Growth and Wealth
The Federal Reserve Bank would have you believe that it is because monetary policy is complicated and they have not yet found the right lever. This is a silly attempt to fool you. There is no magic lever. More below the fold. Gee, the Clown College held a meeting and I missed it! Portland Addresses Housing Crisis By Making Housing More Expensive | The Antiplanner Unsurprisingly, they did something really stupid. Housing affordability is an issue in Portland, the solution is simple, allow land development. The Unafordability is driven by the lack of developable land due to the Urban Growth Boundary, and zoning practices. The corralling Portlandia City Counsel inanity can be an exercise in strategy: I was fired from my internship for writing a proposal for a more flexible dress code She, and some of the other interns, wanted to decide the dress code, so they prepared a petition. The employer wanted serious workers. There was a conflict. The resolution was to fire the petitioners. Understanding the consequences for actions is a sign of maturity. These children were oblivious. The lesson they learned was likely the most valuable thing they could have learned in an internship. The second most important thing was learning that their education left them bereft of even the most mundane job skills.
