European governments are cracking down on the sharing economy, and it's worrying the EU Europe is not prepared to go into the future without a kicking, screaming tantrum! Change is tough, but this is ridiculous. "European Union governments should not ban services like home-rental site Airbnb or ride-hailing app Uber except as a last resort, the EU says in new guidelines, seeking to rein in a crackdown on the "sharing economy".
In guidelines seen by Reuters, the European Commission said any restrictions by EU member states on these new online services should be justified and proportionate to the public interest at stake. "Total bans of an activity constitute a measure of last resort that should be applied only if and where no less restrictive requirements to attain a public interest can be used," the draft document says." Public interest? What public interests? Ride-sharing, what can't it do? "Using a unique panel of over 150 cities and counties from 2010 through 2013, we investigate whether the introduction of the ride-sharing service, Uber, is associated with changes in fatal vehicle crashes and crime. We find that Uber’s entry lowers the rate of DUIs and fatal accidents. For most specifications, we also find declines in arrests for assault and disorderly conduct." So, public interest like higher rates of DUI's, fatal accidents, arrests, assaults, and disorderly conduct? We think the politicians mean greater amounts of graft, and corruption. "Associations of taxi drivers have staged high-profile protests against Uber in France, Britain, Portugal, Spain and many other European countries since 2014." Of course they did, they care only about taxi drivers salaries, and union administration salaries. The general population can go pound sand. The only choices for the politician are do what is best for the public, or engage in the lucrative profession of graft, and corruption. Europe is an antiquated set of societies which have been dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century by the US. It is time we walked away from NATO, and the UN, and left these antiques to figure it out for themselves.
