"SETH BARRETT TILLMAN: Conlawprof and the Recent EU Elections. “Professor AAA wrote: ‘The European elections are exposing the fact that the British party system is well and truly collapsing.’ True: but why is this a bad result? A majority of the voters voted for Leave in the referendum. A majority of MPs (from both major parties) are for Remain. In those circumstances, it is hardly surprising that there would be something like a significant realignment. If there were no meaningful realignment, then democratic institutions would be a failure. It is almost as if some people despise democracy and want that precise failure as long as their preferred outcome should be preserved and their knowledge base of extant institutions should remain prized.'" Voters want liberty, so they vote to leave, politicians want graft and corruption, so they vote to remain. The next step is for voters to get rid of the politicians who do not represent their interests if this means a collapse of the British party system, good. The same is happening in America. Middle America no longer is willing to tolerate progressive graft and corruption. It is only the true believers along the coasts who are eager to drink that toxic Kool-Aide. Expect the realignment to happen more quickly than expected but for the Kool-Aide drinkers to double, then triple down all while their echo chamber, the Clinton Archipelago shrinks in size but concentrates the progressive silliness. As a result, the Republican Party will open, and progressive Republicans will find it challenging to achieve re-election. The voters will clean the Republican house of those who do not represent their interests. On the Democrat side, the politicians already represent those in the echo chamber so they will continue to vote for the loons. But those Democrats unwilling to drink the Kool-Aide will leave, some will swap parties, others will not vote, but they will leave and in droves. The concentration of the lunacy in the Democratic Party is likely to make it a permanent rump party in the American political system. It is unclear what will replace it, but something will replace it. I expect this will look something like the Whig/Republican party shift although unless there is an issue similar to slavery in importance to the nation, it will not meet with the same result a massive power shift to the new party. I don't see that outcome since there are no issues on the Republican side which have the importance of slavery to the 1850s Democrats.
