Trump Should Hit China Hard on Stealing Solar Panel Jobs, Prof. Says "President Donald Trump owes his upset victory in the 2016 election to current and former blue-collar workers in struggling manufacturing centers who felt abandoned by the pro-globalist center-left Democrats. Many of them had supported Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) over former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in the Democratic presidential primaries for the very same reason. They have put their trust in Trump because he promised to deal seriously with America’s trade deficit and specifically to crack down on Chinese theft of America’s well-paying manufacturing jobs. He now has the perfect opportunity to do this. A U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) case sits on his desk, awaiting his decision on the appropriate remedy. Swift and firm action on this case will right a great wrong done to American firms, workers and taxpayers. More importantly, it will signal to Beijing and every other nation that the U.S. government is once again putting the economic interest of Americans first." Analysis below. Theft of manufacturing jobs? Putting the economic interests of Americas first? Sorry, no. What is happening is Autry is an anti-China loon. The article is a mishmash of complaints about China, but it boils down to the idea that because China behaves badly, even illegally, we should enact tariffs, and force Americans to pay much more for these products. Why? If China is behaving illegally, take them to court and get a monetary judgment. Businesses may also need to take more reasonable precautions in protecting their information and data from the unscrupulous eyes of the Chinese. But why on Earth should American consumers be charged more for these problems?
If China wants to subsidize the American consumer, why not let them? What China is doing is charging their people so the Chinese companies can sell products to Americans a below market rates. It seems American consumers are the winners here, and the Chinese people are the losers. Just because the CCP is filled with economic idiots does not mean American consumers should be charged more for products. The tariffs will make US solar companies more profitable, but because the cost of the product will be higher, there will be fewer solar installations. There is no evidence that this will benefit America or Americans more generally outside of the vanishingly small number of people who directly benefit due to their stock ownership in these companies. Do we need to make companies more profitable at the expense of consumers? How odd that an assistant professor of clinical entrepreneurship at the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California would be so illiterate regarding trade, tariffs, and the long ash-binned mercantilist economic theory. Quotation of the Day... - Cafe Hayek More on the Ill-Logic of Mercantilism - Cafe Hayek The Ill-Logic of Protectionism - Cafe Hayek If Trump wants to do the right thing here is will simply eliminate all tariffs for all imports. This would allow the US economy to surge, and allow US companies and others to produce and sell to the American consumer more, better, and lower cost products. America has some of the lowest energy costs in the world. We have some of the highest quality workers. We have an incredibly dynamic marketplace. The idea that imports will somehow impoverish us is absurd. It is mercantilism nonsense. To make America great again, start by eliminating tariffs.
