"Come to think of it, something else doesn’t add up. Why would Trump, who’s up to his eyeballs in transition planning, take time out of his very busy day to gladhand Cruz? It’s hard to believe Cruz would have dropped by unannounced to pay him a visit knowing the demands on Trump’s time right now, and harder to believe that Trump would have dropped everything to meet him. Did Trump invite Cruz to the Tower? If so, why?"
My practice area was quite small a few hundred attorneys in the entire state, so I knew many, and most fairly well. In such a situation, it is imperative to maintain relationships with people to the greatest extent possible. Hard fought litigation campaigns might not be as divisive as a Presidential campaign, regardless, after every litigation, I sought to mend fences when necessary. Trump is a deal maker working in a business where he commonly sees the same faces over and over. He might need to fight hard at times, but he clearly sees the need to smooth ruffled feathers since he will see these same people again, and again. Federal politics is no different, and Trump understands this. He realizes he will need to work with these people over and over, and to do so he must smooth the ruffled feathers which occurred during the hard campaign. I would be unsurprised if Trump were to offer Cruz a choice job. The positive it could do would be significant. I fully expect Trump to continually, and consistently work like the deal maker he is. If Trump is making this move, he is doing so to consolidate the Republican party. He is also showing a very pragmatic side, and magnanimity. None of this will be lost on Cruz, his voters, and the Republican voters who where either anti Trump or lukewarm on Trump. If this comes together, I suspect that Trump will be a better President than I have assumed up to this point. Frankly, this is turning out better than I thought it might.
