Confidence In Higher Education Plummets: Gallup
The problems are myriad. To host 70% of the high school graduating class, many majors have been dumbed down to mid-high school level course work. This includes all of the "Studies" majors, much of the humanities and social sciences. There are too many zero value administrators attempting to help the students avoid becoming adults. The costs are shockingly high, and this permeates all aspects of higher education from tuition and student fees, to housing, books, and recreation.
University has become shockingly expensive adult daycare which coddles and protects the students while providing them with indoctrination more than education.
The minor changes discussed in this article will not suffice. If there is no real change, employers will stop using college grads and turn to other institutions willing to perform the tasks formerly performed by the university.
As it sits, a university degree is little more than indicia that the individual had sufficient intellect to get into the university and sit through mind-numbingly dull courses for at least four years.
One-half of the students enrolled as freshmen at university should be pursuing other ventures or education as they do not have the intellectual horsepower to succeed. Dumbing down coursework does not change this fact. They debt these people incur will be a destructive albatross for decades.
