Gun-free schools are magnets for bad people: Donald Trump This is incontrovertible. All gun-free zones are magnets for bad people with malicious intent because they know that there is a low likelihood of defensive counterfire. No one, not even school shooters want to take counterfire. Good people obey the law, bad do not, creating a zone which excludes good people is a magnet to the bad. More below. John Lott: Gun-free zones easy targets for would-be killers
Lott is the premier researcher in the areas of guns and self-defense. "To criminals, gun-free zones just look like easy targets. But in a recent column for the News Sentinel, Mark Harmon argues that killers pay no attention to gun-free zones. He incorrectly claims that this is the “consensus view” of academic research. Since 1950, more than 98 percent of public mass shootings in America have taken place where citizens are banned from carrying guns. In Europe, every mass public shooting in history has occurred in a gun-free zone. And Europe is no stranger to mass public shootings. In the past eight years, it has experienced a per-capita casualty rate 50 percent higher than that of the U.S. With permit holders preventing dozens of mass public shootings in recent years, it is unsurprising that killers try to avoid resistance." Mass shootings are mainly driven by the existence of gun-free zones, and the increase in Concealed Handgun Licenses and concealed carry has thwarted numerous public shootings in recent years. The lessons we should be learning are gun-free zones kill, and concealed carry saves lives. While the President is calling for exclusive licensing of the "best" school adults (presumably teachers and administrators), this is a weak alternative. The better option would be to eliminate the gun-free school laws, allow and encourage legal concealed carry on school grounds and offer 100% tax credits for adults school workers who take high-quality private sector handgun and self-defense courses, provided they carry concealed while at school. The USA has 22,000 gun laws on the books. What was the problem with them which will be corrected by yet another complexifying law? When any legal area becomes so clogged with laws, it makes enforcement by police nearly impossible because the police cannot know all of the laws or keep up with the changes to so many laws. "At the Wednesday meeting, billed as a "listening session", Mr Trump also promised "very strong" background checks on gun owners. "I will be strongly pushing Comprehensive Background Checks with an emphasis on Mental Health," Mr Trump tweeted on Thursday. "Raise age to 21 and end sale of Bump Stocks! Congress is in a mood to finally do something on this issue - I hope!" Currently under federal law anyone 18 or over can buy a gun from a private, unlicensed seller, although a handful of states have set the minimum age at 21. "Bump stocks" are legal devices that clip on to the back end of a rifle and harness the gun's recoil, essentially turning a semi-automatic weapon into an automatic one." Most of this is ignorance. There are already Comprehensive Background Checks which include Mental Health. The problem is progressives pillory police if they arrest the mentally ill causing them to lose their rights including the right to own or possess a gun. In the Florida shooter story, a young mentally ill man had a minimum of 39 legal encounters, numerous school disciplinary encounters, endless criminal animal abuse and cruelty, and at least one FBI encounter which should have resulted in mental health evaluation, arrest, or both. The problem is law enforcement's unwillingness to act because the progressive left does not want the mentally ill disturbed. "Currently under federal law anyone 18 or over can buy a gun from a private, unlicensed seller, although a handful of states have set the minimum age at 21." This is a bit of Fake News. States like Oregon require the Comprehensive Background Check for person to person sales outside of family transfers, so, while it might be true that federal law, blah, blah, blah, it is not actually true. Because there are 22,000 laws, it is all but impossible for The Straits Times to know this or find it out. The real travesty is that US gun laws are so incomprehensible no one can understand or comply with them. "Bump stocks" are legal devices that clip on to the back end of a rifle and harness the gun's recoil, essentially turning a semi-automatic weapon into an automatic one." Yeah, no! The bump-stock does not essentially turn a semiautomatic rifle into an automatic rifle. The bump-stock allows the recoil of the rifle to move the trigger into a recessed area of the stock which forces the shooters finger off the trigger allowing the trigger to reset. When the recoil moves forward the shooters finger reengages the trigger and if he keeps finger pressure on it will enable the gun to fire again. The gun always remains only an auto-reloading rifle, not an automatic machine gun. I was never interested in a bump fire modified weapon due to the low accuracy these modification cause. These weapons may be fun but they are more range toy than a usable weapon. They also tend to cause jams especially "stove pipe jams." This is because the bump-stock uses some of the recoil impetus to move the trigger assembly back into the recess. Bump fire
