For the same reason you should not look only at your liabilities and freak out. Look at the entire picture, understand the effect, and relax, we need and want the investment surplus. The value in trade is in the imports, not the exports. 

Think of it this way, when we import we get the product, and then some time later we get the money back as investment. How cool is that? This is perhaps the only time one can have one's cake, and eat it too.

On the other hand, once we sell an export product, all we have is foreign money which we must then use to either buy something from that country, barter it for something, or invest in that country. This is not a particularly enticing trade compared to the import. 

Trump needs to get a grip here, take the time to understand basic 100 level economics, and let trade, especially import trade happen without tariffs, or other impediments.

​Why is it that so many misunderstand that free trade is all about the free? Government restrictions are all about the restrictions. Trade deals are just complicated government restrictions. All we need to do is abandon all import tariffs then we have free trade, unfettered by the elites. Trump does not understand this simple truth.
