Stomping On the Suburbs | Newgeography.com
One must ask the Australians the question, do you wish to be serfs, or is this accidental? If you do not wish to be serfs, stop supporting the progressive nonsense, the urban growth boundaries, the housing restrictions, and the flawed land-use planning rules and laws that are destroying your way of life. If you do, enjoy the decline. "For generations, Australia has enjoyed among the highest living standards in the world. The “Australian dream”, embodied largely by owning a single-family home with a small backyard, included well over 70 per cent of households. Today that dream is fading. Those who are aged above 55, notes the Grattan Institute, still enjoy homeownership rates around 80 per cent but property ownership rates among 25-34-year-olds have dropped from more than 60 per cent in 1981 and to 45 per cent in 2016. Equally disturbing, new migrants, the lifeblood of an increasingly diverse country, have experienced a significant fall; skilled immigrants, for example, have seen their homeownership rate plunge just this decade from over 40 per cent to barely 25 per cent. The obvious villain here is high-housing prices, that have risen twice as fast as incomes over the past four decades, a rate far higher than other high-income countries. Today, notes demographer Wendell Cox, "Sydney’s house prices, even after a recent readjustment, are higher, based on income, than any first world city besides Hong Kong; its housing costs eclipse great global cities like Los Angeles, New York, and London.'" Never forget that nearly all wealth inequality comes from these land/home ownership changes. Remember that it is the Boomer generation that is benefiting from these rules and which is forcing them into law. Boomers benefit from high home prices, while the younger generations do not. Nothing will persuade the Boomers to do what their parents and their parents did by keeping land and housing prices low. To the Boomer, money is everything; it trumps family. So, we watch infrastructure collapse because money in the Boomer pocket means more to the Boomer than infrastructure maintenance. Government borrowing is rampant because Boomers what government benefits but do not want to pay for them, so pay with debt so the kids will have to foot the bill. The Boomers' venalty, corruption, and selfishness is legendary and destructive. It needs to stop. I've written about the madness in the anglospheric nations like Australia and Canada, where there are few people and vast untracked expanses of land, yet land-use planning reigns supreme. "To an outsider, Australia’s high housing prices are puzzling for a big country with relatively few people. Only 0.3 per cent of the country’s land is already urbanised compared to 6 per cent in the UK and 3 per cent in the US. To be sure, much is desert, as is the case in America as well, but huge swathes near both east and west coasts remain largely uninhabited." This is a mental illness. Let people build homes. "Most Australians should feel free to dream but instead must struggle against regulations designed to force densification and curb “sprawl”. These policies, according to a recent Reserve Bank study, now adds 55 per cent to the price of a new Sydney home. As Australian cities once filled with family friendly neighbourhoods are being ordered to become denser, they will become far less congenial to families; according to projections from the Urban Taskforce, apartment will make up half of Sydney's dwellings mid-century, whereas only one quarter will be family-friendly detached homes." They want to force you to live like Soviet serfs four to a family, all crammed into an 800 square foot apartment in a mile long, eight-story tall, walk-up apartment bunker. Why? In the words of one of the totalitarians, “The suburbs are about boredom, and obviously some people like being bored and plain and predictable, I’m happy for them,” snarks Elizabeth Farrelly, urban and architecture critic for the Sydney Morning Herald. “Even if their suburbs are destroying the world.” I've been to the city, I've been to the suburbs, the suburbs are generally livable and green, with plenty of natural landscaping, plants, and life. The cities are sterile asphalt, concrete, glass, rubber, and steel, and the urban is filled with cars and noise. The city is unhuman and as such, reduces life expectancy, quality of life, and dehumanized everyone, it gets its hands on. Let the self-hating harridans like eLizardbreath Farrelly live in the city, alone as she will. But overthrow the totalitarian tyrants who seek to enserf you and force you to live in high cost, low quality of life concrete bunkers. As the article notes, most of this nonsense comes out of the environmental and climate change totalitarian camps. These are antihumanist movements designed to replace failed communism/socialism with new prettier environmentalism. But the reality is new is just as antihuman, and pro-mass murder as the old. "Recent elections in Canada and Australia show the huge divide between society’s self-selected elites and the hoi polloi. In Canada, the Liberal government lost many seats, as well as the popular vote, in large part due to green policies; much the same occurred in Australia in the last election, where conservatives, despite growing concerns over climate issues, gained seats, particularly in energy-producing areas. Predictably the results in Australia led local celebrities and pundits to brand their fellow citizens as unremittingly “dumb.” Ultimately, the battle to defend the “Australian way of life”, and that of people in democracies around the world, depends on resisting the arrogance of the gentry, the planning elite and their real estate allies. The struggle to preserve the aspirations of the middle class, and their children, could well emerge as the signature issue of our time." Every 80 years, we are forced to face a newly invigorated totalitarianism. The forces of liberty need to come together to fight and destroy the forces of totalitarianism. Just as we did in America in 1776, 1860, 1945, and now today. Australia's problem shows that this is a worldwide issue not just American, or Australian. I see little chance for peace any more. Prepare for war, and prepare well, a ferocious storm is on the horizon.
